Prince Philip Lost His Home, Family and Country Before He Ever Married the Queen
Subscribe to the channel: @LostGrandeurUK
In 1921 he was born a prince of Greece and Denmark in a villa on the island of Corfu, cousin to half the crowned heads of Europe. Before he was 18 months old, a revolutionary court had banished his father and a British warship carried the infant out of Greece in a cot made from a fruit box. By the time he was 10, his mother had been committed to a Swiss sanatorium, his father had drifted away to Monte Carlo, and all 4 of his sisters had married German princes and moved to Germany. He held the blood of emperors and not one home he could call his own. This is the story of how that stateless boy remade himself into the man who stood beside a queen for more than 70 years.

In this video, we talk about the lost early life of Prince Philip before he ever married the Queen, including his birth at Mon Repos on Corfu, the 1922 coup and the Trial of the Six, his father Prince Andrew's court martial and the fruit box escape aboard HMS Calypso, his mother Princess Alice's breakdown and forced committal, the recommendation attributed to Sigmund Freud, his four sisters' marriages into a darkening Germany, the death of his sister Cecilie in the air crash at Ostend, his schooling under Kurt Hahn at Salem and Gordonstoun, the guardianship of Louis Mountbatten, his wartime service at the Battle of Cape Matapan, his 1947 naturalisation and the surrender of his royal titles, and Princess Alice's wartime rescue of a Jewish family in occupied Athens.
