Description
Göbekli Tepe, in southeastern Turkey, was built more than eleven thousand years ago, about six thousand years before Stonehenge and long before writing, pottery or the wheel. Overlooked in a 1963 survey as a medieval cemetery, it was excavated from the 1990s by Klaus Schmidt, who uncovered circles of carved T-shaped pillars up to five and a half meters tall and called it the world's first temple, built by hunter-gatherers before farming.
Newer excavations have revised that picture, finding hearths, stone tools, thousands of grinding stones for wild grain and a rock-cut rainwater pit, while the idea that the builders deliberately buried their monuments is now debated. (Sources: German Archaeological Institute excavations; Lee Clare and Moritz Kinzel, recent research at Göbekli Tepe.)
