Description
Vlad III of Wallachia, born in Sighișoara in 1431, inherited the name Dracula from his father’s Order of the Dragon. He drove back Sultan Mehmed II in 1462, and the Byzantine historian Laonikos Chalkokondyles described the forest of impaled bodies outside Târgoviște. German printers turned him into one of the first horror bestsellers of the printing age.
Four centuries later, on 8 August 1890, Bram Stoker found the name in an 1820 book by William Wilkinson at the Whitby public library, along with a footnote claiming that Dracula meant devil. Researcher Elizabeth Miller, who studied Stoker’s notes held at the Rosenbach in Philadelphia, found no mention of impalement and called the popular link between the novel and the prince, popularized in 1972 by McNally and Florescu, a mountain made out of a molehill.
