Description

Broad Peak is the mountain climbers are told to attempt first. The twelfth-highest peak on Earth, sitting right next to K2, it has a reputation as one of the easiest of the eight-thousand-meter giants—a walk-up, a training climb, the sensible warm-up before the truly savage mountains. That reputation gets people killed. In the summer of 2026, on a single morning, this "beginner's" mountain killed ten climbers in seconds, among them one of the most accomplished mountaineers who has ever lived. We'll come back to that. But it wasn't a freak event; it was the loudest example of something Broad Peak has been doing quietly for decades. For roughly every twelve people who reach the summit, one person dies on the mountain—a fatality rate comparable to peaks climbers are terrified of. And while almost every other big mountain has grown safer over the decades as gear and forecasting improved, Broad Peak has gone the other way. Its death rate is going up. This is a video about why Broad Peak is far more dangerous than its gentle reputation suggests—and why that reputation may be the deadliest thing about it. Make sure to subscribe for weekly videos!
