Description

My grandmother's kitchen looked crowded to anybody who didn't know better. But every winter, those shelves paid her back. In this video, I walk through 12 things Black grandmothers stocked for winter. For each one, I tell you what it replaced at the store and the number that made it worth the shelf space. We cover dried beans, cornmeal, the bacon grease can, sweet potatoes in a cool closet, collards after the frost, canning jars, and the Black home demonstration agents who taught so many of these skills across the South. Being careful with a dollar is a skill your family already paid to learn. Come take it back. This week's job: cook one pot of dried beans and freeze it in dated portions. Safety note: use real canning jars and a tested recipe for home canning. Your county Extension office can help. Tell me in the comments what was always on your grandmother's shelf. Half my best tricks come from this comment section. #frugalliving #pantrystaples #grandmaswisdom
