The year was 1984. A cook from Cincinnati plugged a hot plate into a hallway wall in Columbus, fried a slice of something gray, and fourteen lunch ladies went home with her recipe on a napkin. Seventy-five cents a plate. It is number one in this video.
People call food like that poor food. I call it the reason a dollar and five cents could put a hot tray in front of a child. For thirty-five years I priced every tray by the plate, so here are seven foods priced the same way, and every one of them comes in under a school tray.
Bread pudding made from the heels of the loaf. A pot of greens and the broth they cook in. Mushroom barley soup. Fried rice from yesterday's rice. A baked potato as the whole supper. Red beans and rice, the Monday supper of New Orleans. And number one, goetta, the Cincinnati breakfast that turns two pounds of pork and a canister of steel-cut oats into sixteen mornings.
All seven together come to about four dollars and forty-five cents. That is less than one take-out lunch.
I am Mrs. Doris. A school kitchen in Scioto County, Ohio, on a dollar and five cents a tray.
Prices are estimates from October 2026 and change by store and season. Two safety notes from the video: cooked rice goes into the refrigerator within two hours, not left warm on the stove, and dried red kidney beans must be soaked, drained and boiled hard for at least ten minutes. A slow cooker on low is not enough for raw kidney beans.
What food did your family call poor food that you would pay good money for today? Tell me below.
