Description

📕 Get the full cookbook - The Lunch Lady's $3,600-a-Year Grocery Cut (175 recipes & tricks, scaled for 1, 2 or a family): www.dorislunchlady.com/ Twenty-four ounces. A plain silver can with black letters on the side and no picture at all. For thirty-five years that can of beef came off the government truck in my school kitchen and turned into sloppy joes, chili and taco day for four hundred children. The canned meat aisle in your store is a different story. Every can has a picture, and some of the cheapest ones are mostly water, salt and fat. So I turned the cans over, read the labels and worked out what you pay per pound for the meat inside. The six worth a spot on your shelf: luncheon meat (buy the one with less salt), corned beef for Saturday hash, pork in its own juices for pulled pork sandwiches, a small canned ham, roast beef in broth for a hot beef sandwich at home for under five dollars, and number one, canned ground beef, the cousin of that silver school can. And the five I would leave right where they are: Vienna sausages, potted meat food product, dried beef in the little glass jar, canned beef stew, and the plastic bucket of freeze-dried meat that promises twenty-five years. Mark the month on top of every can with a marker the day it comes home, and always open the oldest first. I am Mrs. Doris. A school kitchen in Scioto County, Ohio, on a dollar and five cents a tray. Prices are around what I paid and change by store and by season, so check the shelf tags where you shop. Unopened canned meat keeps its best quality for two to five years in a cool, dry cupboard. Once opened, it goes into a covered dish in the refrigerator and gets eaten within three or four days. A large canned ham marked Keep Refrigerated is not a shelf can. Throw out any can that is bulging, leaking or badly dented along a seam. Which can in your pantry has been there the longest, and do you know what year it came home? Tell me below. #cannedfood #pantrystockpile #over60 #groceryhacks #mrsdoris
