This fall a pie came back to Costco. Twelve inches across, more than three and a half pounds, about six dollars, and I could not buy the makings of it for that if I tried.
For thirty-five years I read every price by the pound in a school kitchen. Now I shop that warehouse for one, on the first Monday of the month, with my neighbor Glenna. Here are thirteen foods in there I wish I had found years sooner, and four I leave on the shelf.
Worth buying: twenty pounds of organic flour, Saigon cinnamon, organic peanut butter, the five-pound bag of rolled oats, grass-fed butter from New Zealand, whole bean coffee, grass-fed beef patties frozen one at a time, real maple syrup, a meat I never once put on a lunch tray, regional raw honey, real Parmigiano Reggiano, a bean that once sold for more than silver, and at number one, the giant pumpkin pie.
Left on the shelf: brisket burnt ends, fully cooked bacon, the four-pack of frozen pepperoni pizza, and the food court chicken bake.
For every one: what it costs by the pound or the serving, how one person finishes it before it goes bad, and what I make with it.
I am Mrs. Doris. A school kitchen in Scioto County, Ohio, on a dollar and five cents a tray.
Prices are around what I saw at Costco in the fall of 2026 and change by warehouse, region and week, so check the shelf tag where you shop. Food safety notes from the video: cook ground beef to 160 degrees and lamb chops to 145 degrees with three minutes of rest, keep pumpkin pie in the refrigerator, refrigerate real maple syrup once it is open, never give honey to a baby under one year old, and do not eat raw flour or raw dough.
What is the one food you found at Costco that you wish you had found years sooner? Tell me below.
