Description

📕 Get the full cookbook - The Lunch Lady's $3,600-a-Year Grocery Cut (175 recipes & tricks, scaled for 1, 2 or a family): http://www.dorislunchlady.com/ Since I started cooking for one, most of my cooking happens in the microwave, not on the stove. Here is what took me years to learn: a microwave does not heat your food. It heats the water inside it, and the water cooks the rest. Find the water, and you know what to do. Fifteen tricks, every one of them tested in my own kitchen: corn on the cob with no pot of water, garlic that peels itself, brown sugar that turned into a brick, bread that went hard on the counter, soft butter without a puddle, a hard old lemon, yesterday's rice with an ice cube, a winter squash your hands can actually cut, the cup of coffee you forgot about, vegetables steamed in a cereal bowl, a baked potato in eight minutes, a poached egg in a coffee mug, the rest of the parsley, a birthday cake for one, and the right way to warm up a plate of supper so the edges are not hard and the middle is not cold. I am Mrs. Doris. A school kitchen in Scioto County, Ohio, on a dollar and five cents a tray. Times in this video are starting points. Most home microwaves run between 700 and 1,200 watts, so add or take away a few seconds for yours. Safety notes from the video: put a wooden stir stick or something else that is not metal in a cup of water or coffee before you heat it, heat it a minute, not three, and let it stand before you reach in. Never microwave an egg in its shell or a whole peeled hard-boiled egg, and prick the yolk of an egg in a mug. Stay at the machine while herbs dry. Cover food with a plate or a damp paper towel, not plastic wrap pulled tight. And warm leftovers until they reach 165 degrees in the middle. What do you warm up most nights now, and how many plates are you setting? Tell me below. #microwavehacks #cookingforone #kitchenhacks #over60 #mrsdoris
