Description
They arrived already qualified. Airborne school, the Special Forces Qualification Course, often a full tour in country and a master sergeant's stripes behind them. Then MACV-SOG handed them the radio, put them at the back of the file behind men younger and lower ranked than they were, and told them to watch how a teenage Montagnard soldier read a trail.
This is what actually happened to a new man in the Studies and Observations Group in his first days, and why the most selective unit of the Vietnam War started its best people at the bottom of the team. On this ground the only currency that counted was time across the border, and a brand new arrival had none of it.
It is also a myth correction. Almost every version of this story online gets the details wrong, so we go back to the record and name every source out loud. The word "recruit." The washout rate nobody can actually source. The casualty rate "over one hundred percent." The cyanide tooth. We separate what the veterans and the Army's own history really say from what the internet keeps repeating, and we flag the places where the sources themselves disagree instead of smoothing them over.
Featuring the first hand account of John Stryker Meyer, the US Army's published unit history, a US Army War College study built on roughly forty veteran interviews, the declassified 1970 Combat Reconnaissance Manual, and Major John Plaster on where those famous numbers really come from.
