Description
Your room is clean. Properly clean, the way I've been teaching. And you stood in the doorway, looked at it, and it still did not feel the way you hoped, and you could not have said why.
I owe you the other half. Clean and lovely are not the same thing, and nobody ever explains the difference.
MY BOOK: The Spotless Method, the whole system written down in the order I'd actually do it.

Let me be straight about what I am and what I am not. I am not a designer, and I will not pretend to be one. What I am is the woman who spent forty years maintaining thousands of rooms that professionals designed to feel expensive on a modest budget. I did not design them. I cleaned them, every single day, which meant I noticed what every one of them had in common long before anyone told me why.
There are four reasons a clean room still feels flat, and nearly all of the fixes are free.
What's inside:
• THE SINGLE PLANE TRAP. In most rooms everything sits in one band from the floor to about two and a half feet up, so your eye runs sideways, hits a wall and stops. The room reads as a picture instead of a space.
• THE CURTAIN TRICK, which is the best free change in this video. Most people hang the rod on top of the window frame. Hang it two to four inches below the ceiling instead and let the curtains reach the floor. The fabric hides where the window really stops, and your eye assumes it runs much higher. You are inventing a taller window for the price of re-hanging a rod.
• FLOATING THE FURNITURE. A sofa jammed against the wall stops looking solid. Pull it out six inches and the shadow behind it proves to the eye that it is a real object in a real space.
• THE BIG LIGHT, and why one overhead fixture flattens everything in the room. What to do instead, and the three layers of light that keep your corners from going dark.
• THE THREE FIVE SEVEN RULE, and the tall, medium, flat arrangement that makes a surface look styled instead of stacked.
• Which of the four cost absolutely nothing, because for us that matters more than the theory.
AND THE ONE I CARE ABOUT MOST. There is a fourth trap, where everything in a room matches so perfectly that it stops reading as a home and starts reading as a showroom. I can speak to that one with more authority than almost anyone, because a hotel room is the purest example of it that exists. Beautifully lit, perfectly proportioned, everything coordinated, and completely soulless. On purpose. It has to belong to nobody. I made four hundred rooms a week that belonged to nobody, and there was not one object in any of them that meant anything to anyone.
So take the first three things from hotels, because hotels get them right and they get them right cheaply. Then deliberately break the fourth. Do the one thing a hotel is never allowed to do, and put the things in that are yours.
In an earlier video I told you to gather your scattered photographs into one proper gallery wall, and I told you not to throw away things you love because a list on the internet said so. Here is the rest of that thought. Those objects are not clutter you are being permitted to keep. They are the reason the room reads as somebody's home. A room without them is a hotel room, which is a fine place to spend a night and a sad place to live.
RENTING, OR CAN'T DRILL? Three of the four still work completely. The furniture, the lighting and the arrangement need no holes in anything.
⚠️ SAFETY, and this one is not optional. Adding lamps means adding CORDS, and a cord crossing a floor is a genuine fall risk. Never run one across a walkway and never tuck one under a rug. Keep it tight along the baseboard, and if a lamp cannot go somewhere without a cord crossing where you walk, the lamp goes somewhere else. A room that looks lovely and trips you is not an improvement.
And the curtain rod and any high-hung pictures mean a ladder, so they are not yours to do. Nothing on a ladder, nothing on a chair, both feet on the floor. Have somebody do the rod and the pictures in one visit. The idea is yours, the ladder is theirs.
I read every comment. Go and stand in a doorway tonight, and tell me which of the four your room is missing. And tell me what your twenty percent is, the object that does not match anything and that you would never part with.
New videos every week on keeping a lovely home after 60, gently, and in the right order.
