Description

What Monthly Retirement Income Makes You Comfortable in America? A little support goes a long way! If you’d like to help me keep creating, you can do so at https://ko-fi.com/liamfinance How much monthly retirement income actually makes you comfortable in America? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data used in this video, households age 65 and older spent about $61,432 in 2024, or roughly $5,119 per month. Households ages 65 to 74 spent closer to $5,446 per month. That makes this a useful retirement income ladder: $4,000 a month — Tight $5,000 a month — Manageable $6,000 a month — Comfortable $8,000 a month — Flexible $10,000 a month — Affluent The biggest shift happens around $6,000 a month. Compared with $5,000, that extra $1,000 provides $12,000 more each year for travel, repairs, healthcare, hobbies, and emergencies. But income alone does not determine comfort. A retiree earning $8,000 a month with $5,400 in fixed expenses has only $2,600 left. Another retiree earning $6,000 with $2,400 in fixed expenses has $3,600 left. Less income, but more financial breathing room. We also break down what it may take to reach each level using Social Security, pensions, and retirement savings. Starting with roughly $3,208 per month in average Social Security for an older married couple: $5,000 a month may require about $538,000 invested. $6,000 may require about $838,000. $8,000 may require about $1.44 million. But pensions can dramatically reduce those savings requirements. Housing matters just as much. Eliminating a large mortgage can improve retirement cash flow by the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional invested wealth. The real question is not simply how much retirement income you receive. It is how much remains after housing, healthcare, transportation, taxes, and other fixed expenses. Around $5,000 a month may cover an average older household lifestyle. Around $6,000 begins creating real breathing room. And $8,000 provides much more flexibility. #Retirement #RetirementIncome #RetirementPlanning #SocialSecurity #RetirementSavings Disclaimer: This video is for general educational and informational purposes only and is not financial, investment, tax, Social Security, pension, or retirement advice.
