My Honest Advice To Anyone Who's Saved $500K-$1M For Retirement
If you have $500,000 to $1 million saved for retirement, the most important question is not whether the balance sounds big enough.
It is how much income your portfolio actually needs to produce.
Using a 3.9% starting withdrawal illustration:
$500,000 produces about $1,625 a month
$750,000 produces about $2,438
$1 million produces about $3,250
But Social Security, pensions, housing costs, and lifestyle can completely change whether those balances are enough.
A $500,000 portfolio supporting a $55,000 lifestyle may work comfortably.
The same $500,000 supporting a $75,000 lifestyle may not.
Housing can matter even more. Cutting housing costs from $2,500 to $900 a month creates the same financial effect as adding nearly $500,000 to a portfolio.
A small pension can also transform the picture. Adding just $1,000 a month of pension income can reduce the pressure on a $500,000 portfolio dramatically.
The key calculation is simple:
Annual spending minus Social Security and pension income, divided by your portfolio.
That withdrawal percentage tells you more about whether retirement works than the account balance alone.
