Description
How Many American Retirees Actually Have $500,000 Saved? Federal Reserve Data
How many American retirees actually have $500,000 saved?
According to Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances data used in this video, only about 15% of households headed by someone ages 65 to 74 have at least $500,000 in retirement accounts.
That is roughly 1 in 7 households.
The breakdown is even more revealing:
$100K+ — about 34%
$250K+ — about 23%
$500K+ — about 15%
$750K+ — about 11%
$1M+ — about 9%
$2M+ — about 4%
So $500,000 is not an average retirement balance. Statistically, it puts a household well ahead of most others in the same age group.
Using a simple 4% first-year illustration, $500,000 produces about $1,667 a month. Add average couple Social Security of roughly $3,208, and total gross income reaches about $4,875 a month.
But savings rank does not tell the whole story. Pensions, housing costs, taxes, account type, and withdrawal rates can make a retiree with $250,000 financially stronger than someone with $500,000.
