Description

Sunday in my mother's house started on Saturday night. I would hear it from the bedroom. The iron first, the little hiss of it on the shirts. Then the big pot going onto the stove, the one with the lid that did not quite fit, and the smell of it moving through the house while the rest of us fell asleep. In the morning the shoes were in a row by the door, and the beans had been on since before any of us were up. Nobody discussed whether we were going. In my mother's house Sunday was not a question, the way breakfast was not a question. It was the shape of the week, and the week had been cut to fit it. I thought it was just Sunday. It took me my own house, and my own children who wanted to sleep in, to understand what I had been watching. My mother was not a woman who went to church on Sunday. She had built the whole day, from the Saturday-night iron to the Sunday-night prayer, into one long act of keeping something, and she never once used a word for it. If your Sundays have gotten thin, church and then the rest leaking away into the phone and the errands, sit down, mija. You have not failed at Sunday. You were handed a Sunday with one thing in it. Our mothers had seven. In this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha gives you the seven, kept as plain and concrete as the morning-habits video and the house video, and shows that every one of them is sitting in the Book: • She got Sunday ready on Saturday night. "Bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil" the day before (Exodus 16:23). The rest was meant to be received, not assembled. • She cooked the biggest meal of the week, and it was on before church. The first Christians met in the temple and then "broke bread in their homes" (Acts 2:46). Sunday dinner is the second half of church. • There was always one more plate. "If I only set it when I know someone is coming, it is not hospitality. It is a reservation." (Hebrews 13:2; Luke 14:13) • She did no work. Which, for a Mexican mother, meant she only cooked. And the rest was for the servant too (Exodus 20:10), with the honest caveat: the Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27), not the other way around. • Sunday afternoon was for the old people. Remember the Sabbath and honor your father and mother sit side by side on the same tablet (Exodus 20:8, 12; 1 Timothy 5:4). • She settled up. The borrowed dish, the two dollars for the eggs, and the sentence she owed. "Let no debt remain outstanding" (Romans 13:8; Colossians 3:13). Monday started at zero. • She committed the week before it started. Sunday night at the table, the six days handed over before they happened. "Commit to the LORD whatever you do" (Proverbs 16:3; Proverbs 31:27). And she holds back the thing that changed how she sees the whole week: Sunday is not the day off from the week. It is the day the week is made from. Stay to the finish. "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy." (Exodus 20:8) 💛 A gentle word: none of the seven earn you anything. There is no scoreboard for Sundays. A woman who does all seven is not closer to God than a woman working a double shift because that is the shift she was given. These are not payments. They are seven ways of remembering, on the one day God asked us to remember. Of the Ten Commandments, it is the only one that begins with the word "remember." He knew which one we would lose first. I am not a pastor. I have no letters after my name and no pulpit to stand behind. I am a mother with a worn Bible, passing down what was passed down to me. Everything here, go and check for yourself. Do not take my word for it. Take His. If one of the seven is going to be yours this Sunday, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so it reaches another house before Saturday night. God bless you, mija. 📖 Tell me in the comments what YOUR mother did every Sunday. The pot, the plate, the visit, the thing she would not let you do, the prayer you did not know she was saying. Tell me your county too, and how old you were when you first noticed her doing it. I read every one, and I pray over more of them than you know.
