Description

A tortilla fell on the floor. You picked it up and walked it toward the trash, and you did not make it two steps. If you grew up in a Mexican house, you know what happened next. She took it out of your hand, brushed it off, kissed it, and said two words: "Es pecado." It is a sin. You heard those two words more often than your own name. It is a sin to throw away food. It is a sin to laugh that loud. It is a sin to paint your mouth. It is a sin to write with that hand. It is a sin to miss church, no matter how sick you are. And the big one: "Te va a castigar Dios." You believed every one. She was the holiest person you knew. And then one day you opened the Book and went looking, chapter and verse. And they were not there. "Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it." (Deuteronomy 4:2) This is not a video against anybody's mother. This whole channel is a list of what she got right. Today is the short list, the seven where she added. In this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha opens her worn Bible to each one, and for every one she also shows what the Book DOES say, so nobody walks away with a license: • Throwing away food. Jesus said "let nothing be wasted," but He never called it sin. And God commanded the farmers to LEAVE food in the field. (John 6:12; Leviticus 19:9-10; 1 Timothy 4:4) • Laughing too loud, and dancing at all. "El que ríe en viernes, llora en domingo." In the one story Jesus told about the Father's house, it is the house with the music on. (Ecclesiastes 3:4; Psalm 126:2; Luke 15:25) • Lipstick and earrings. "Las mujeres decentes no se pintan." When God described His own tenderness, He described Himself putting earrings on a woman. (Genesis 24:22; Ezekiel 16:11-12; 1 Peter 3:3-4) • Writing with the left hand. The deliverer God sent was left-handed, and the Book brags about seven hundred more. Sin lives in what you do. It has never lived in how you were knit. (Judges 3:15; 20:16; Psalm 139:13-14) • Talking to God in your own words. The priest looked at Hannah praying her own way and called it sin. God answered her anyway. And the prayers you know by heart still count. It was always both. (1 Samuel 1:13-15; Psalm 62:8) • Missing church when you are sick, or caring for someone who is. "It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." The husband who no longer knows your name is the sheep in the pit. (Matthew 12:11-12; Hebrews 10:25; Matthew 18:20) • "Te va a castigar Dios." The disciples asked the exact same question: who sinned, this man or his parents? "Neither," said Jesus. Your sick child is not a bill. Your widowhood is not a sentence. (John 9:2-3; 1 John 4:18) And she holds back two things for the end. First, the one thing her mother never once called a sin, that the Book does. And then the WHY: the question her mother asked her from her own bed, near the very end, after eighty years of being careful, and the verse Bertha read her twice. Stay to the finish. "He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17) 💛 A gentle word: nobody here is telling you to do any of these things. Bertha is telling you they are not sins, and those are different sentences. If your own conscience tells you not to dance, do not dance, and God bless you (Romans 14). And please do not take this list and go correct your mother with it. If she is still alive and she still kisses the tortilla, let her kiss the tortilla.
