Description

The gorra came off at the door. Not in the parking lot, not in the pew. At the door, with my mother's hand already on the back of my brother's head before his foot was inside, and the cap was in her purse before he could argue. Every Sunday. And every Sunday she said the same thing, which was not "because I said so." She said: "You do not wear a hat in the house of a man you respect. So you do not wear one in His." A few weeks ago I made a video about nine things my mother would not let us do in church, and one of the nine was about clothes, and that one item got more comments than the other eight put together. Half of you wrote to tell me what your mother would not let you wear. The other half wrote, some of you a little angry, that God does not care what we wear and I should not either. You are both right, and tonight I show you how. In this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha gives you the verse the angry half is standing on FIRST, before the list, so nobody hears the list wrong: "People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7) God is not at the door checking hemlines. He has never once turned a person away for shorts. So what was her mother doing at that door with the cap? She was not dressing us for God. She was dressing us for what the clothes SAY. THE SEVEN: • The gorra. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." (Exodus 3:5) The first instruction God ever gave a man about His presence was to take something off. • Shorts and chanclas. The king's banquet, and the man who came to a wedding dressed like it was not one (Matthew 22:11). He was welcome. It still said something. • Bare shoulders. Not a lecture. A black cardigan, folded small in her purse every Sunday of her life, put over a girl's shoulders without a word. "Not everything is beneficial... no one should seek their own good, but the good of others." (1 Corinthians 10:23-24) • The Saturday jeans. Not denim. Yesterday. "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy" (Exodus 20:8), and holy means set apart. • Anything wrinkled. God told a whole nation to wash their clothes two days before He came down the mountain (Exodus 19:10). Saturday night's iron was the first act of Sunday worship. • The team jersey. A jersey is a flag. It says who you belong to. "No one can serve two masters." (Matthew 6:24) • The skirt she measured with her hand. Her rule, for her daughters, in her house, and not a rule on you. "Mija, I am not measuring your skirt. I am measuring how much of your Sunday morning you want to spend being looked at." And THE ONE RULE she never broke, not with a fever of a hundred and two, not the morning after her father's funeral: you dress for God the way you would dress to meet the person you respect most. Then the part she holds back: the rule has two halves, and most people who keep the first one break the second. Stay to the finish. "You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister?" (Romans 14:10) 💛 A gentle word: if you have ever been made to feel unwelcome in a church because of what you had on, that was not God. That was a person doing exactly the thing this video warns against. My mother, who would not let us through the door in a cap, never once in my childhood said a word about what anyone else in that church was wearing. When I asked her why, in the car, she said the two words I have carried for forty years: "Mija, he came." I am not a pastor. I have no letters after my name and no pulpit to stand behind. I am a mother with a worn Bible, passing down what was passed down to me. Everything here, go and check for yourself. Do not take my word for it. Take His. If one of the seven made you smile remembering, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so it reaches another family before Sunday. God bless you, mija. 📖 Tell me in the comments what YOUR mother would not let you wear. The rule I did not list, the thing she said at the door, the cardigan, the hand on the knee, the shoes she made you polish. I want them warm. And if you are the other half, the ones who wrote last time to say God does not care what we wear, write again, because you were right and I hope tonight you heard me say so. Tell me your county too. I read every one.
