Description
It was my cousin's wedding, and a woman walked in wearing white.
Not cream. Not ivory. White, in a church, twenty minutes before the bride. And the whole left side of that church went quiet in the particular way a Mexican family goes quiet, which is not silence. It is two hundred people deciding at the same moment not to say anything out loud.
My mother, three pews back, did not say anything either. She just reached out without looking and put her hand on my arm, because I was fourteen and I had already opened my mouth.
My mother had a list of things you did not do at a wedding. She never wrote it down, she never explained it, and every one of us knew every rule on it by the time we were ten. I have watched that list fall out of our families one wedding at a time, until now guests stand in the aisle with their phones during the vows and nobody puts a hand on anybody's arm.
So today I am writing it down.
In this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha gives you the seven, kept exactly like the church video, with the reason behind each one and where it sits in the Book:
• You do not wear white. A wedding has one bride and one day, and the only thing asked of you is that you not make it about you. "In humility value others above yourselves." (Philippians 2:3)
• Your phone stays down during the ceremony. You are not the photographer. The vows are not content. "A time to be silent." (Ecclesiastes 3:7)
• You do not arrive after the bride. In her day the doors were locked, and that was mercy. "The door was shut." (Matthew 25:10)
• You do not dress for a club. One sentence only, because the church-clothes video already said the rest.
• You do not leave before the blessing. That is the moment they walk out married for the first time, and you came to witness it. (Luke 24:50)
• You do not get loud before the toast. My mother danced until the band went home, but the first hour still belongs to the head table. (Ephesians 5:18, and the honest next part)
• You do not show up empty-handed. El sobre. And the honest word: the envelope was never the ticket. The worst thing is not an empty hand, it is not coming because your hand is empty. (1 Peter 4:9)
Then the part she has wanted to make for weeks, for everyone who married into a Mexican family and never had it explained: el lazo (Genesis 2:24, Ecclesiastes 4:12), las arras (Proverbs 31:11), and la bendición at the church door (Numbers 6:27). What each one means, so next time you are the one who can tell the person beside you what they are looking at.
And the one rule she never broke, held back for the end: you do not miss the wedding of family. Not for a fight, not for distance, not for money. Because the first miracle Jesus ever did was at a wedding He did not skip (John 2:1-2), and the Book does not end with a battle or a throne. Stay to the finish.
"Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb." (Revelation 19:9)
💛 An honest word about what this video is not: there are priests on this platform answering the hard questions about weddings, who may attend what and who may marry whom. Those are real questions and this video does not touch one of them, because that is their seat. This is a mother's video about how you behave as a guest at the most important day of somebody else's life. Behavior and respect, and the things we all knew before anybody had to say them. If your family did any of these differently, take what is yours (Romans 14).
I am not a pastor. I have no letters after my name and no pulpit to stand behind. I am a mother with a worn Bible, passing down what was passed down to me. Everything here, go and check for yourself. Do not take my word for it. Take His.
If there is a wedding coming in your family, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so this reaches the cousin before she buys the white dress. God bless you, mija.
