Description
Can walnut shells darken gray hair? They can, if you use the right part of the walnut, and Janet walks Black women over 60 through exactly which part that is, and how to turn gray temples and gray streaks a soft brown that blends back into dark hair.

The dye lives in the black walnut hull, the soft outer husk, not the hard shell sold as scrub grit, and that one mix-up is why so much walnut hair dye never works. You'll hear how her grandmother boiled walnut hulls in a washtub every October and dabbed the leftover dye on her own gray, and the three easy steps to make a walnut hull rinse at home for about eleven dollars: the tea, the soak, and the rinse, with real amounts and how often to repeat it.
Here's what a natural walnut hair color does on our hair. On dark hair it softens the gray. On white hair it starts gold and builds toward brown, and it won't turn anything black. She sets it against the box dye treadmill, what the Sister Study found about permanent dye and Black women, and the safety steps that matter, from the patch test to the gloves. She also covers how to keep gray hair soft once it's colored, from wash day to satin at night.
