Description

In 1983, an Air Canada Boeing 767 ran out of fuel in midair and landed at an airfield partly used as a racetrack, with all 69 people aboard surviving! The aircraft became famous as the Gimli Glider after a fuel-calculation error involving pounds and kilograms left it without enough fuel. With both engines stopped, the pilots had to guide the massive passenger jet toward a former military airfield in Manitoba, Canada. Remarkably, this wasn't the only passenger jet to survive such an extraordinary emergency. In 1982, a British Airways Boeing 747 temporarily lost power in all four engines after encountering volcanic ash, but the pilots restarted them. In 2001, an Air Transat Airbus A330 lost both engines over the Atlantic and successfully glided to the Azores, saving all 306 people aboard. These emergencies remain remarkable chapters in aviation history. Would you trust a passenger jet gliding without engine power? DISCLAIMER: These incidents involved exceptional circumstances and professionally trained flight crews. Emergency outcomes depend on aircraft conditions, altitude, weather, and pilot response. #gimliglider #aviationhistory #boeing767 #airplanefacts #aloha #aviationhistory #aviation
