Description
Airport runway numbers are not randomly assigned. They tell pilots the runway's approximate magnetic compass direction. For example, a runway numbered 18 points roughly toward 180 degrees, or south, while the same runway approached from the opposite direction is numbered 36, indicating approximately 360 degrees, or north. Airports with parallel runways may add letters such as L, R, or C to distinguish left, right, and center. Those massive white rectangles painted along many runways also have important purposes. Aiming point markings are typically placed around 1,000 feet beyond the landing threshold, helping pilots identify their intended landing area. Touchdown zone markings provide additional visual distance references, generally arranged in 500-foot increments. These numbers, letters, and markings are part of a standardized visual system that helps pilots understand runway alignment and landing positions.
Did you know that runway numbers are based on compass directions?
DISCLAIMER: Runway designations depend on magnetic orientation and may change as magnetic variation evolves. Marking layouts differ by runway type and applicable aviation standards.
