America's Strangest Mail Delivery Service

America has a floating ZIP Code, 48222, assigned to the J.W. Westcott mail boat that delivers mail to ships along the Detroit River. The United States Postal Service identifies it as the country's only floating ZIP Code. But American postal geography gets even more unusual. General Electric has the memorable ZIP Code 12345 in Schenectady, New York, while the lowest numbered ZIP Code, 00501, belongs to the Internal Revenue Service in Holtsville, New York. In Washington State, reaching the Point Roberts Post Office by car requires traveling through Canada because the community is geographically separated from the rest of mainland Washington. Florida also has a remarkable postal landmark: the Ochopee Post Office, housed in a tiny building that previously served as an irrigation pipe storage shed for a tomato farm. American ZIP Codes have stories far beyond ordinary addresses. Would you recognize a boat that has its own ZIP Code? DISCLAIMER: ZIP Code assignments and postal operations can change. These examples reflect documented United States Postal Service records. #zipcode #detroitriver #postalhistory #usps #americanfacts #usashorts
