Description

Reindeer have an extraordinary adaptation that helps them survive Arctic winters: the reflective layer behind their eyes changes from golden in summer to deep blue in winter. This specialized layer, called the tapetum lucidum, helps reindeer make better use of the limited light available during the darkest months. Scientists have also discovered that Arctic reindeer can detect ultraviolet light, which humans cannot normally see. This ability may help them distinguish important features in snowy environments. Female reindeer can grow antlers too, unlike females of most other deer species. Together, these remarkable biological characteristics make reindeer especially well adapted to life in extreme northern environments. Their winter vision demonstrates how animal biology can respond to dramatic seasonal changes in sunlight. Which reindeer adaptation surprised you the most? DISCLAIMER: Reindeer adaptations can vary between populations and environments. Research on Arctic reindeer should not automatically be generalized to every reindeer population. #reindeer #animalfacts #wildlifescience #arcticanimals #didyouknow #animalshorts
