Description
The Cherohala Skyway turns 30 years old in 2026! Join Dash for Adventure as we visit the Cherohala Skyway Visitor Center in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of America's most beautiful scenic highways and discover the fascinating history behind how this legendary mountain road came to be.
How did a simple idea in 1958 become a $100 million mountain highway connecting Tennessee and North Carolina? The story involves covered wagons, horseback riders, determined local citizens, decades of construction, and an incredible vision that finally became reality in 1996!
The Cherohala Skyway officially opened in October 1996, creating an approximately 43-mile scenic route between Tellico Plains, Tennessee, and Robbinsville, North Carolina. Today, this National Scenic Byway winds through the Cherokee National Forest and Nantahala National Forest, climbing to elevations exceeding 5,400 feet and providing some of the most breathtaking mountain views in the southeastern United States.
But the highway's history began long before the first cars traveled its completed route!
In 1958, local community leaders organized a historic wagon train to draw attention to the need for a better road connecting East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. What began with covered wagons and horseback riders eventually became a decades-long effort to create one of the most spectacular mountain roads in America.
Local leader Charles Hall and many others worked tirelessly to make the Cherohala Skyway a reality. Construction began in the 1960s, but funding challenges, environmental concerns, and the difficulty of building through rugged mountain terrain delayed the project for decades.
Finally, on October 12, 1996, the Cherohala Skyway was officially dedicated!
Now, 30 years later, we're visiting the Cherohala Skyway Visitor Center in historic Tellico Plains to celebrate this incredible achievement and share the history of the people, places, and events that made it possible.
Whether you love Tennessee history, Appalachian Mountain heritage, scenic drives, road trips, motorcycle touring, Ford Bronco adventures, RV travel, or exploring the beautiful backroads of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, this is a story worth discovering.
