Description
Did you know that the railroad that helped build Townsend, Tennessee, also traveled deep into the Great Smoky Mountains to Elkmont? Today, we're exploring the fascinating history behind the Little River Railroad & Lumber Company Museum in Townsend, TN!
Join us on another Dash for Adventure as we discover one of the most interesting historical attractions on the peaceful side of the Smokies. This wonderful railroad museum preserves the story of the Little River Lumber Company, its historic logging railroad, and the people who helped shape the Smoky Mountains long before they became one of America's most visited national parks.
🚂 EXPLORE THE LITTLE RIVER RAILROAD MUSEUM
During our visit, we take you along to explore:
🚂 The historic Shay steam locomotive #2147, known as "Dorothy"
💧 The old railroad water tower
🚉 The original Walland Railroad Depot, now home to museum exhibits and railroad history
🪵 Historical photographs, logging equipment, artifacts, and the remarkable history of the Little River Lumber Company
🏠 The charming gift shop housed in a replica of the historic Elkmont Post Office
🌲 The connection between Townsend, the logging industry, Elkmont, and the formation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park
🌄 THE ELKMONT CONNECTION — A FAVORITE PLACE OF OURS!
One of the most fascinating parts of this adventure is learning how the Little River Lumber Company and its railroad were connected to Elkmont, Tennessee.
If you've followed our adventures, you know how much we enjoy visiting Elkmont, exploring its historic cabins, and discovering the history hidden throughout the Great Smoky Mountains.
Long before Elkmont became the historic destination we love visiting today, it was a busy mountain logging community. The Little River Railroad carried timber out of the mountains, but it also played an important role in bringing visitors and vacationers into the area.
By 1908, railroad tracks connected Townsend with Elkmont. Later, passenger train service helped people reach the mountain resort communities around the Appalachian Club and Wonderland Hotel.
It's incredible to think that the peaceful forests, historic buildings, and mountain scenery we enjoy today were once part of a busy lumber and railroad operation!
Visiting the museum gives us an entirely new appreciation for Elkmont and the history of the Smokies.
