🔗 Save Thousands on Repairs, Replacements and Power Bills — My Complete Home-Saving Method: https://nakamurasecrets.com Your refrigerator is where about three thousand dollars a year goes to die, and most of it leaves the house in a trash bag on a Tuesday. That figure is not a guess and it isn't mine. In April 2025 the EPA published "Estimating the Cost of Food Waste to American Consumers" (EPA/600/R-25/048), and it puts the cost of the food an American buys and never eats at $728 a year per person, $14 a week. For a household of four, $2,913. About 11% of everything you spend on food. The number most people still repeat, $1,500 a year for a family of four, comes from 2010 grocery prices. I'm Richard Nakamura. I fixed appliances for thirty years and I grew up eating out of a Japanese kitchen, and this video sits where those two things meet: 25 things Japanese households do with a refrigerator and a freezer that almost no American kitchen does. One rule explains all 25, and it saves you memorising them. Cold doesn't stop anything, it only slows it down — the national home freezing guidance says freezing slows enzyme activity but does not halt it. And water expands when it freezes, so ice punctures the cells it forms in. Half of these tricks stop something before it goes in. The other half break something on purpose, because broken is what you want. A few of the 25: • Freeze cooked rice while it's still steaming, wrapped flat — and keep rice and bread out of the refrigerator entirely • Freeze ginger whole and grate it frozen: the ice already broke the fibres for you • Freeze tofu on purpose. The monks on Mount Koya were doing it centuries ago, and it has its own name: koya dofu • Dashi in an ice cube tray, and what to do with the kombu you steeped • Why green vegetables need blanching first, and why mushrooms don't • Freezer burn is sublimation, not dirt: a quality problem, not a safety one (USDA) • Your two crisper drawers are different rooms, and the slider isn't decoration • Fill the freezer, don't fill the refrigerator — thermal mass versus airflow • The soft-freezing compartment Japanese refrigerators have, and how to fake it in forty minutes • Asazuke, nukazuke and shio koji, three ways a refrigerator buys you time • Number one is the cheapest thing in the video and it decides how well the other 24 work One honest note, because the title is about money: the EPA's $2,913 is what a household of four throws away, not what you would save. Nobody saves all of it. Cut it by a third and you've kept about a thousand dollars. 🔗 Save Thousands on Repairs, Replacements and Power Bills — My Complete Home-Saving Method: https://nakamurasecrets.com SOURCES • EPA, Estimating the Cost of Food Waste to American Consumers (EPA/600/R-25/048, April 2025) — https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2025-04/costoffoodwastereport_508.pdf • USDA FSIS, Freezing and Food Safety (0 °F, freezer burn) — https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/freezing-and-food-safety • National Center for Home Food Preservation, blanching before freezing — https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/freeze/freeze-general-information/blanching-times/ • FDA, refrigerator and freezer temperatures, and hot food — https://www.fda.gov/food/buy-store-serve-safe-food/refrigerator-thermometers-cold-facts-about-food-safety • Maytag, using your crisper drawer (humidity settings and ethylene) — https://www.maytag.com/blog/kitchen/crisper-drawer.html • Kikkoman, koyadofu (freeze-dried tofu) — https://www.kikkoman.com/en/cookbook/glossary/koyadofu.html • Zojirushi, storing rice before and after cooking — https://www.zojirushi.com/blog/tips-on-how-to-store-rice-before-and-after-cooking/ • Panasonic, Japan Quality refrigerators (soft freezing) — https://www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/jq/fridge.html #japanesekitchen #foodwaste #refrigerator #freezertips #foodstorage #savemoney
