Description

Upstairs in a Roman apartment block there were no pipes, so at night the chamber pot went out of the window, onto whoever was walking below. Sometimes the pot came too. The poet Juvenal said you'd be a fool to go out to dinner without making your will first. It got so bad that Rome made a law: if something poured or thrown from a building hit someone, whoever lived there paid double the damage, and if a free man was killed, fifty gold coins. Juvenal's advice for the walk home? Pray they only empty the pot.
