Description

During the Roman siege of Syracuse, Archimedes built a giant iron claw that grabbed Roman warships by the bow, hoisted them out of the sea and dropped them. Legend says his mirrors set their sails on fire. The Romans got so scared that if they saw a rope over the wall, they fled. Rome took the city anyway, and the general Marcellus ordered Archimedes taken alive. A soldier found him drawing circles in the sand. "Don't disturb my circles!" The soldier killed him.
