Description

Under Rome's oldest law code, the Twelve Tables, a witness convicted of lying was thrown from the Tarpeian Rock, a cliff of the Capitoline Hill right above the Forum. A slave caught in the act of stealing was flogged first, then thrown off too. And the cliff was named after Tarpeia, the girl who betrayed Rome: she let the Sabine army into the citadel in exchange for 'what they wore on their left arms', meaning their heavy gold bracelets. But on their left arms they also carried their shields, and they crushed her under them.
