Description

Emperor Commodus fought in the arena himself. One day he shot the head off an ostrich, walked up to the senators' seats with the head in one hand and his bloody sword in the other, and grinned and wagged his head at them: you're next. The senators were desperate not to laugh, because laughing at Commodus could get you killed. So one senator pulled the laurel leaves off his wreath and chewed them, so nobody could see him smirk, and got the whole row to do the same. That senator was Cassius Dio, and he wrote it all down.
