Description

Horses produce gas as microbes in their digestive system break down the fibre in grass and hay. This process, called hindgut fermentation, helps them extract energy from plants they cannot fully digest on their own. The caecum and large colon act as fermentation chambers. Microbes turn plant fibre into fatty acids that the horse absorbs and uses for energy, releasing gas along the way. Gas normally moves through the intestines and passes out naturally. When it accumulates, it can stretch the intestinal walls and cause painful gas colic. Colic means abdominal pain and has several possible causes, including gas, blockages and intestinal displacement. Passing gas can reduce pressure, but it does not confirm that the underlying problem has resolved. A horse showing signs of colic needs prompt veterinary assessment. #animals #wildlife #nature #natureholic #horses #horsedigestion Why horses produce gas, horse digestion explained, horse passing gas, equine digestive system, hindgut fermentation, horse gut microbes, grass and hay digestion, horse caecum, horse large colon, fibre digestion, gas colic in horses, trapped gas, horse abdominal pain, equine biology, horse facts, animal digestion, animal biology, animal facts, Natureholic, animal shorts, nature shorts
