Description

-م In 1972, only 7 in 100 Americans said they had no religion. Today it's close to 3 in 10 — one of the fastest religious shifts any country has recorded within a single lifetime. This video traces the full fifty-year story behind that number. We follow three forces behind America's rise of the "nones": generational replacement (each generation starting further from religious affiliation than the last), the merging of religion and politics since the 1979 founding of the Moral Majority, and the geography that kept entire communities — the rural South, historically Black Protestant churches, Hispanic Catholic parishes, evangelical megachurches, and Latter-day Saint wards — much closer to where the country stood decades ago. The detail most headlines leave out: a large share of the "nones" never actually stopped believing in God. What declined was institutional belonging, not private faith — what sociologists call believing without belonging. 🕊️ If this kind of careful, evidence-based history matters to you, subscribe to **The Caelustra** 🔔 for more deep dives into the American religious experience. Does your own family's story look more like "left," or more like "stayed"? 💬 Tell us in the comments. #TheCaelustra #AmericanHistory #ReligiousHistory #ReligiousNones #Christianity #Catholicism #Evangelicals #LatterDaySaints #FaithInAmerica #Documentary
