Description
Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Ohio is the largest house in the state. The man who built it, the founder of Goodyear, lost the company that paid for it.
Frank Seiberling founded the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in eighteen ninety eight on a factory he bought with a down payment he had to borrow. Within twenty years Goodyear was the largest tire company in the world, and at the height of that fortune Seiberling built Stan Hywet Hall, sixty five rooms, more than twenty thousand panes of glass, on an estate of around three thousand acres.
Then he lost the company. This is how the biggest house in Ohio got built and what happened to the man who built it, through the post-war rubber crash, the New York bankers who took over Goodyear in nineteen twenty one, and what Frank Seiberling did next, broke and past sixty, that almost nobody in his position ever does. We cover the house itself, the fortune behind it, the reversal that cost him the company he founded and named, and where Stan Hywet stands today.
If you have toured Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, or you grew up in Akron with the Seiberling name, this is the part of the story the house tour moves past quickly.
