Description

While Pope Urban II was uniting the West at the Council of Clermont, the Muslim Near East was doing the opposite, tearing itself apart. No single leader called for unity. No army gathered. The last strong hand had been dead for three years, and the empire he built was busy burying itself. الفتنة Fitna - the strife within. In 1092, Sultan Malik-Shah I and his vizier Nizam al-Mulk died within weeks of each other, and the Great Seljuk Empire that had unified the Muslim East for a generation collapsed into a war of succession. His widow Terken Khatun held Isfahan for her infant son. His nephew Berkyaruq fought for the throne. His uncle Tutush, who had seized Damascus and Aleppo, marched against Berkyaruq, and was killed near Ray in February 1095, the same year Urban was preaching across France. Tutush's death split Syria in two. His sons Ridwan and Duqaq inherited Aleppo and Damascus and spent the following years fighting each other, not preparing for any invasion. Kilij Arslan, the young Seljuk sultan of Rum, was occupied fighting the Danishmends on his own eastern border. In Cairo, the Shi'a Fatimid Caliphate watched the Sunni Seljuk collapse and saw an opportunity to reclaim Palestine, not a threat to defend against. When the first garbled reports of an armed host moving through Byzantine territory reached the region in 1096 and 1097, they landed in a world with no one listening. Word passed instead through the people who actually carried it: sailors in Tripoli, refugees fleeing the Aleppo-Damascus war, frontier riders on the Anatolian marches, long before it ever reached a throne. This is the story of that silence. Four regions. Four languages. Four ordinary voices who sensed something was wrong and had no way to warn anyone who mattered. I wrote this across four languages and scripts to make that fragmentation audible: Classical Arabic (Arabic script), Persian (Persian script), Kurmanji Kurdish (Kurdish Latin script), and Old Anatolian / Seljuk Turkic (the scholarly Latin transliteration historians use for it, since the language was actually written in Perso-Arabic script at the time and isn't directly attested this early). Built with the help of modern AI and extensive human historical research and editing. This is the second chapter of my CRUSADES series, the companion piece to Council of Clermont. Same year. Silence on one side, a roar on the other.
