Description

A deep-sea camera at 4,000 feet caught a pod of killer whales driving down past it — deeper than any orca has ever been recorded going — and they were not hunting. They were fleeing. The orca is the top of the entire ocean; great white sharks abandon whole coastlines when it arrives, and nothing is known to hunt it. Yet this pod came down in total, deliberate silence — the most vocal predators in the sea gone dark, hustling a calf between them, choosing the crushing dark over whatever was above. At the top of the light, for less than a second, the black stopped being empty — a border wider than the pod was long, where the beam failed to come back. Was it a lighting artifact the technician was right to cut — or did a pod of the ocean's apex predator just show us there is something above them, in the water we call safe?
