Description
Lions vs Buffalo | Battles for Survival on the African Savannah (Full Episode) | Wildlife Documentary. On the open grassland a lion pride brings down a buffalo cow, and then the herd turns. Hundreds of horns come back at a thundering charge, and the hunters run, ears flat, tails down, pursued for more than a hundred yards. Across four hours of chained chapters, the African lion and the Cape buffalo, the animal the old hunters called the Black Death, meet again and again on the savanna.
But that is only one battle in a contest for the throne of Africa. Through cinematic footage and educational storytelling, this documentary follows five contenders across one day, from the Kalahari Desert to the Serengeti and on to Zakouma in Chad, and watches each of them fall before the rival it least expects. The cheetah, over sixty miles an hour and built for a twenty second sprint, backs away from the sword straight horns of an oryx that never overheats. The lion, four hundred pounds with a heart barely half a percent of its body weight, wins only when the whole pride moves as one. The buffalo, nearly a ton with a horn shield no fang passes through, is unbeatable in formation and dinner the moment the formation breaks. The zebra runs from the throne and survives, except the one that is half a beat slower at the Boteti River. And the spotted hyena, a queendom where every female outranks every male and jaws crack a buffalo femur, breaks on a six ton wall of elephants defending a calf in the dark.
Then night falls on Zakouma, Chad, where the contest is no longer fang against horn but survival against extinction. More than four thousand elephants once roamed here. Eight years of ivory poaching left fewer than four hundred and fifty. Today, guarded by a ranger unit named after the fastest snake in Africa, the herd is back above five hundred and fifty, and Zakouma shelters more than half of all Kordofan giraffe left on Earth. At the last waterhole of the dry season a lion takes a kneeling warthog in a single strike, and above it all the white backed vulture circles, the creature that never fights for the throne and inherits it every time.
Epic Moments in This Documentary:
A cheetah pulling up short before the horns of a gemsbok in the Kalahari
A lioness launching from the shadow of a dead tree into a wildebeest herd
A lion pride bringing down a buffalo cow on the open plain
An entire buffalo herd routing the pride and chasing it for a hundred yards
A lioness ambushing zebra at the bank of the Boteti River
Hyenas cutting an elephant calf from the herd and the mother answering
A Kordofan giraffe lowering twenty feet of neck to drink under watching eyes
A lion closing on a kneeling warthog in the Sahel night, no chase
Vultures stripping a carcass to white bone in a few hours
Lions testing a buffalo herd at a dry season waterhole
Buffalo bulls turning to defend a calf against a hunting pride
Who is the true king of the savanna? Not the fastest, not the strongest, not the largest army. The answer is the cycle itself, the only thing on this grassland that has never been overthrown, and the one thing human hands are now breaking link by link. Roughly twenty thousand lions remain in Africa, nearly half what there were three generations ago. Zakouma proves the other direction is possible.
This documentary contains raw, unfiltered footage of nature at its most intense. Viewer discretion is advised. All footage is captured in the wild with no interference to natural animal behavior.
