The 1990s were this strange middle ground between the old analog world and the modern digital one. You had cassette tapes giving way to CDs. You went to the video store to rent a VHS, instead of opening a streaming app and having thousands of movies instantly available. The internet existed, but connecting to it meant listening to dial-up do its horrifying modem noises while everyone else in the house waited for you to finish. Floppy disks were actual storage devices. And if you wanted to find information for a school project, you might open Encarta instead of typing the question into Google. That's one of the things that makes the 1990s so fascinating. Technology was already changing incredibly quickly, but it hadn't completely taken over everyday life yet. You could leave the house without carrying a smartphone. You weren't constantly connected to social media. You didn't have notifications following you everywhere. And when you went out with friends, you couldn't instantly check where everyone was. You actually had to figure things out. The decade also had some incredibly recognizable cultural quirks that are almost impossible to imagine today. Smoking was still common in many public places. Phones were attached to walls. TV schedules actually mattered. Video games came on physical cartridges and discs. And waiting for something was just part of life. You waited for the movie to finish rewinding. You waited for the internet to connect. You waited for your favorite show to come on. You waited for your parents to get off the phone so you could use the internet. And somehow... We survived. That's probably what makes this nostalgia so powerful. The 1990s weren't necessarily objectively better than today. Plenty of things were worse, technology was far less convenient, and there were problems that modern society has thankfully moved past. But there was something different about having a world that wasn't constantly demanding your attention. In this video, I react to Memory Trails' look at growing up in the 1990s, remember the technology, entertainment, and everyday experiences of the decade, and talk about what was lost as everything became faster, more convenient, and more connected. Because there was something magical about a time when the internet wasn't everywhere... ...because most of the time, you couldn't get online at all.
