Description

He spent much of his life in exile. Came home, became king, and died without an heir. What happened next changed England forever. On October 13, we remember Saint Edward the Confessor, King of England from 1042 until his death in 1066. Edward was born into the English royal house during an age of invasion and political upheaval. Driven into exile while still young, he spent much of his early life in Normandy before returning to England and eventually becoming king. His reign placed him among powerful noble families and serious political conflict, especially involving Earl Godwin of Wessex and his family. Yet Edward also became remembered for his Christian devotion and generous support of the Church. At Westminster, Edward supported the construction of a great new Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Peter. It was consecrated on December 28, 1065, but Edward was already too ill to attend. Eight days later, on January 5, 1066, Edward died without a child to inherit the throne. The succession crisis that followed brought Harold Godwinson, Harald Hardrada of Norway, and William of Normandy into the struggle for England. Within months came Stamford Bridge, the Battle of Hastings, Harold’s death, and the Norman Conquest. Edward’s political world disappeared, but his religious memory continued to grow. Pope Alexander III canonized Edward in 1161. On October 13, 1163, Edward’s remains were solemnly translated to a new shrine at Westminster. The title “Confessor” does not mean Edward was a priest hearing confessions. In historic Christian usage, a confessor is a saint who openly witnessed to the faith without dying as a martyr. Saint Edward the Confessor, pray for us. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 365 SAINTS IMAGINED Faith. History.
