Description
He had survived captivity, escaped suffering, and finally reached safety. So why would Father Isaac Jogues willingly return to the very place where he had nearly lost his life?
**Saint Isaac Jogues | The Mission He Chose Twice**
On October 19, the Catholic Church in the United States honors Saint Isaac Jogues and the North American Martyrs.
Born in France in 1607, Isaac Jogues became a Jesuit missionary who traveled to North America to share his Catholic faith. Working among the Huron-Wendat people, he encountered a world of cultural differences, political tensions, and growing danger.
In 1642, Mohawk warriors captured Isaac and several companions. During his captivity, he suffered severe injuries and witnessed the death of fellow missionary René Goupil. After more than a year, Dutch settlers helped him escape.
Safe in France, Isaac faced a decision that would define his life. Rather than abandon his calling, he returned to North America in 1644.
In 1646, he participated in a peace mission to Mohawk territory. But as tensions returned, Isaac once again faced the possibility of captivity and death.
On October 18, 1646, Saint Isaac Jogues was martyred at the age of thirty-nine.
Canonized by Pope Pius XI on June 29, 1930, he is remembered among the eight North American Martyrs.
This cinematic Catholic biography explores courage, forgiveness, missionary dedication, and the extraordinary faith of a man who chose to return despite his fear.
