Description

Polar bears are Arctic apex predators with a powerful sense of smell, specialised seal-hunting techniques and an enormous appetite for energy-rich blubber. This close polar bear encounter shows the animal investigating beneath a raised platform. Ringed and bearded seals are their main prey. Polar bears use sea ice as a hunting platform, waiting beside breathing holes and searching for seal dens hidden beneath snow. Their sensitive noses help locate prey that remains out of sight. A polar bear can consume 100 lbs—around 45 kg—of seal blubber in 1 sitting. This concentrated energy supports life in the Arctic and helps build fat reserves for periods when hunting opportunities are limited. Polar bears can make predatory attacks on humans, although attacks are rare. Research into documented attacks found that nutritionally stressed adult males posed the greatest threat to human safety. #animals #wildlife #nature #natureholic #polarbear #arcticwildlife Nature, wildlife, animals, animal facts, wildlife facts, nature facts, animal behaviour, animal behavior, animal kingdom, animal adaptations, biodiversity, natural world, wildlife encounters, nature shorts, polar bears, polar bear hunting, polar bear smell, Arctic wildlife, seal hunting, polar bear diet
