What Was the Creature in the Waters of Moria? - Lord of the Rings Explained

What was the Watcher in the Water, and where did it come from? When the Fellowship reached the West-gate of Moria, something ancient was waiting beneath the dark waters outside. Tolkien never gave the creature a name, never clearly explained its origins, and left us with only a handful of tantalizing clues. In this video, we take a deep dive into everything Tolkien tells us about the Watcher in the Water, from the flooding of the Sirannon and the fate of Balin’s colony to its attack on the Fellowship and Gandalf’s disturbing suggestion that there were things beneath Middle-earth older and fouler than Orcs. Could the Watcher have been one of the mysterious Nameless Things? Why did it seize Frodo first? And how long had it been lurking outside the gates of Moria? Let’s look at what Tolkien actually wrote, what we can reasonably infer, and what remains one of Middle-earth’s strangest unsolved mysteries.
