Description

🗺️ Plan your Michigan trip with our 4 travel guides (E-Book): road trips, old diners, lighthouses & places to stay 👉 https://michigan-guide-box.netlify.app/?src=yt-description On the morning of March 29, 1927, the Detroit Free Press ran a front-page headline: "War Declared by Gamblers, Asserts Police." Hours earlier, three men had been machine-gunned in an apartment hallway, and investigators counted more than 110 bullet holes. We counted down 10 Michigan places where organized crime ran its business, in order of time: from Prohibition rum-running on the Detroit River, through the Purple Gang's war years, to a racetrack, a suburb of quiet brick homes and a restaurant parking lot on Telegraph Road in the summer of 1975. The countdown: 10. Blossom Heath Inn (St. Clair Shores) 9. Ecorse and the Detroit River 8. Hamtramck 7. Milaflores Apartments (Detroit) 6. Club Manitou (Harbor Springs) 5. The LaSalle Hotel (Detroit) 4. Collingwood Manor (Detroit) 3. Hazel Park Raceway 2. Grosse Pointe Park 1. Telegraph Road, Bloomfield Township Which of these surprised you most? And if your family has a Michigan Prohibition story, tell us in the comments. Subscribe to Michigan Hometowns for more stories from the towns Michigan built. This video covers documented historical events from the 1920s to the 1970s, based on court records, historical society archives and period newspapers. Businesses operating at these locations today are not connected to the events described. #Michigan #DetroitHistory #PurpleGang #JimmyHoffa Music: "Darkling" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) — Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 — https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
