I built a large underground cabin alone in the wild mountains — stone, timber, and everything inside made by hand. I dug the space into the clearing and built the walls from dry-laid fieldstone and timber, the two materials that make an earth shelter both solid and livable through serious cold. The size meant more digging, more stone, more time — but a larger space done right holds heat better and lives in more comfortably than anything smaller that was rushed. Inside I built all the furniture by hand: a sleeping platform, a table, shelving, everything arranged for warmth and long-term comfort rather than just getting through the night.
