Description

Every autumn the same videos appear telling you prices are about to jump and you need to fill a cupboard this week. Some of that is real and a good deal of it isn't. What's real: heating costs rise the moment it gets cold. Holiday demand pushes some things up and pulls others down. Winter produce gets more expensive because it travels further. And storms cause local shortages, which is the one actually worth preparing for. What doesn't happen is a nationwide jump on the first of the month that everybody must beat. In this video: water first, because it's the thing that vanishes from shelves the moment a storm is forecast. Shelf-stable staples. Tinned protein you can eat cold with no stove. Oil, which has moved more than most. Shelf-stable milk. Seasoning, which people skip and shouldn't. Medication and the health cupboard. And the non-food items that empty from shops first. Number one is the whole method, and it's the opposite of what these videos usually say. One extra item a week, not a trolley full this Saturday. If money is short this winter, dial 211 for food pantries and heating bill help near you. 📗 When the Lights Go Out.
