Description
Feeding six people is not feeding two people three times. It's a different problem with different arithmetic, and almost nothing written about food budgets is written for it.
Portions that stretch stop mattering when there are six plates. The small bag is never the right bag. And the single largest cost in a big household isn't the food at all. It's the nights when there was nothing ready and somebody ordered instead.
A big household also has a different failure mode. A couple that runs out of something eats something else. A household of six that runs out has five people waiting and a decision to make in twenty minutes. Which means depth matters more than variety.
In this video: the ten things that pass all three tests — does it stretch, does it keep long enough that the big bag gets finished, and does it turn into more than one meal. Oats against cereal, which isn't close. Why dried beans are the only protein in the shop that can make the claim they make. Whole peeled tomatoes rather than diced, and the reason. And the hardy vegetables that solve the waste problem entirely.
Number one isn't an ingredient. It's the pot you cook on Sunday, because it removes the expensive nights.
