Why You Carve Pumpkins (It Wasn't Always Pumpkins) 🎃 #HalloweenHistory #Folklore #Origins

The words “trick or treat” first appeared in print in 1927, in a Canadian newspaper describing children in Blackie, Alberta, but the night they describe is far older. Halloween grew from Samhain, the Irish festival of “summer’s end,” from the Christian vigil of All Hallows’ Eve before the feast of All Saints on November 1, from medieval souling for soul cakes and Scottish guising, and from the carved turnips of the Stingy Jack legend that Irish emigrants turned into pumpkins in America. The popular idea of a Celtic “god of the dead” named Samhain was an 18th-century error by Charles Vallancey. (Sources: Ronald Hutton, The Stations of the Sun; Lethbridge Herald, 1927.)
