Description

A king, a royal barge and a centuries-old journey across the floodwaters! Every year, as the Zambezi floods Zambia’s Western Province, the Lozi people celebrate Kuomboka - meaning 'to get out of the water.' At its heart is the Litunga, the Lozi king, travelling from his flooded palace at Lealui to higher ground at Limulunga in the magnificent Nalikwanda, a black-and-white striped royal barge bearing an elephant, symbol of royal power. Paddled by around 100 men, the six-to-eight-hour procession unfolds to the thunder of the sacred Maoma drums, traditional songs and dances. And there’s an extraordinary historical twist: during the journey, the Litunga changes into a British admiral’s uniform presented to King Lewanika by Edward VII in 1902, reflecting the kingdom’s historic ties with the British Crown.
