Why do higher reps seem to work better for your legs than for your upper body? Arthur Jones — the man behind Nautilus training equipment and one of the most influential minds in the history of strength training — answers this question in a seminar clip that quietly explains one of the biggest mistakes lifters make on leg day without even realizing it.
Jones breaks it down with a simple but powerful principle: your upper body muscles are built for short, heavy bursts of work — not endurance. Your legs, on the other hand, are built for endurance. That’s not opinion, it’s physiology. The muscle fibers in your lower body are structurally and functionally different from the ones in your chest, back, shoulders, and arms, which is exactly why treating leg day the same way you treat upper body day almost always leads to underwhelming results.
So what does Jones actually recommend? If you want to produce the best possible results on a squat or leg press, take just a little bit less weight — not a drastic drop, just around 5 to 10% less than you’ve been using — and increase your repetitions enormously. He’s not talking about the standard “8 to 12 reps” range that gets recycled across every generic workout program online. He’s talking about working up to 50, even 100 total reps per leg, before you increase the weight again.
This is a direct challenge to the way most people train legs today. Heavy, low-rep squats absolutely have their place in a serious strength training program, but if hypertrophy and real leg development are your goal, Jones’ seminar footage suggests that endurance-focused, higher-rep training may be far more productive for the lower body than simply chasing heavier and heavier weight on every set.
This is classic old school bodybuilding philosophy — grounded in Jones’ decades of hands-on experimentation with Nautilus and MedX equipment, high intensity training principles, and real-world results rather than trendy programming. It’s the kind of raw, unfiltered training wisdom that shaped some of the most impressive physiques of the golden era of bodybuilding, and it’s still shockingly relevant for anyone training legs today.
If your squats and leg presses have plateaued, or if your legs simply aren’t keeping pace with the rest of your physique, this might be the missing piece. Try the 5-10% weight reduction, push your rep ranges up toward that 50-100 total zone, and pay close attention to how your legs respond compared to traditional low-rep training.
