Description
The name Canada originally came from an Indigenous word meaning "village" or "settlement," long before it referred to one of the world's largest countries. In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier learned the word "kanata" from Indigenous youths who were referring to the village of Stadacona, near modern Quebec City. Cartier subsequently applied the name to a much larger surrounding region. Other countries have equally interesting naming traditions. Greenland's name is traditionally associated with Erik the Red, who hoped an appealing name would encourage settlers to travel there. Venezuela is commonly explained as meaning "Little Venice," connected to early European explorers encountering houses built over water. The name Cameroon is associated with Portuguese explorers and a river known for shrimp. These names preserve traces of exploration, languages, and cultural encounters across centuries.
