Description
The James Webb Space Telescope pointed its most powerful infrared camera at Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, and watched it for forty-eight hours across one full year. What it found shocked astronomers. The material orbiting this four-million-solar-mass black hole was not calm. It was flickering constantly, erupting into five to six major infrared flares every single day, with dozens of smaller bursts crackling between them. And none of it followed a pattern. The activity was random, relentless, and completely unexpected from a black hole long considered one of the quietest in the known universe.
In this deep dive, we explore how Webb's Near-Infrared Camera revealed a constant, chaotic light show from the accretion environment surrounding Sagittarius A*. We break down the two physical processes scientists believe are responsible, plasma turbulence and magnetic reconnection, and explain the groundbreaking wavelength time delay that allowed researchers to watch electrons lose energy in real time as they spiral along magnetic field lines near the event horizon. We trace the full history of how Sagittarius A* was discovered, from Karl Jansky's accidental radio detection in 1931 to the Nobel Prize-winning stellar orbit campaigns of Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez, to the Event Horizon Telescope's first image in 2022. And we reveal what Webb's findings mean for our understanding of black hole accretion physics across the entire universe.
Our galaxy's central black hole was supposed to be quiet. Webb just proved it never stops.
